Benefits for the environment
The thermal waste utilisation plant at Zwentendorf/Dürnrohr is located right next to the Dürnrohr coal and gas power station. The two plants have joined to create a combined energy generation system unique in Europe: the energy generated by waste incineration is used to generate electricity at the Dürnrohr power plant and to supply the neighbourhood with district heating.

Thanks to this interconnected system, fuel consumption at the power station can be cut by some 50,000 tons of coal and 10 million cubic metres of natural gas - savings which have not only a positive impact on the company's balance sheet but which also reduce emission and thus improve the air quality in the surrounding Tullnerfeld region.

Some 90% of the waste is delivered in special containers by rail , which adds a further bonus for the environment. Only the garbage from the immediate vicinity is shipped to the plant by trucks.
