Why opt for Zwentendorf

EVN Abfallverwertung NÖ invested considerable time and effort in the search for an optimal site of its central Lower Austrian waste incinerator. Altogether 24 options were studied in great depth for their ecological and economic suitability before EVN opted for Zwentendorf/Dürnrohr.

It is only here that the energy generated from waste incineration can be fully utilised: in combination with the caloric power plant already operating at Dürnrohr, this energy is used to generate electricity, district heating and process steam for industrial use.

A major criterion for the choice was the economic synergies offered by the site’s proximity to the calorific power plant of Dürnrohr. After all, the object was not just to find the best ecological solution but also to keep the costs as low as possible so as not to affect garbage collection charges.

Another major factor in opting for Zwentendorf was the broad consent among the local population. In June 1997, the citizens of Zwentendorf were polled about the project proposed by EVN Abfallverwertung NÖ. At an attendance rate of 72%, 74% of the citizens of Zwentendorf decided in favour of the plant.

The final decision was taken in July 1997.

In the summer of 2001, the in-depth environmental impact analysis was completed and construction of the plant could be finally started.
