The thermal waste utilisation plant operated by EVN Abfallverwertung NÖ at Zwentendorf/Dürnrohr is designed to handle some 500,000 metric tons of garbage a year.

It went on stream on 1 January 2004, the date as of which the Austrian ordinance governing landfills stipulates that all garbage must be incinerated. Full-scale utilisation was ensured even before the plant was first constructed, due to early contracts made for waste delivery.

Its main customer and garbage supplier is NÖ BAWU, a network of waste management associations in Lower Austria. Waste produced by households in Lower Austria and delivered by NÖ BAWU takes up about two thirds of the capacity of the Dürnrohr plant.

For its remaining capacity, EVN Abfallverwertung NÖ has gained the custom of several private waste disposal companies that deliver industrial waste for thermal treatment at the EVN Abfallverwertung NÖ plant.
