The Company

Engineering and competence at the service of the environment

EVN Abfallverwertung Niederösterreich GmbH is a fully-owned subsidiary of the multi-utility group EVN AG. Founded in 1994 as a joint venture of the Austrian State of Lower Austria and EVN AG, its remit was to solve the problem of untreated waste and its uncontrolled dumping, and to set up a thermal waste utilisation plant centrally located in Lower Austria, so as to prevent the accumulation of contaminated sites and their cost-intensive clearance.

At Zwentendorf in Lower Austria, EVN Abfallverwertung NÖ built a thermal waste utilisation plant that was and is at the cutting edge of waste engineering in Europe. Its original two lines have been fully operating since 1 January 2004, processing 300,000 metric tons of waste a year. In early 2010, a third line went on stream, which has increased the plant’s capacity to 500,000 tons per year.

EVN Abfallverwertung NÖ has put down strong roots in Lower Austria. Through its history and development, it perceives itself and is perceived as a Lower Austrian business. Its purpose is to design, build/implement and operate plants and processes to deal with and dispose of garbage and to generate energy from waste. In pursuing its goals, EVN Abfallverwertung NÖ always makes use of the state of the art in waste engineering.

It offers its know-how not just in Austria but has successfully entered the international market. EVN Abfallverwertung NÖ acts as EVN’s know-how centre, developing the best suited solution for each location and customer in Austria and abroad, tailoring its services specifically to local needs. The first international project to emerge from this philosophy is the thermal waste utilisation plant MSZ 3 in Moscow/Russia, where EVN undertook planning, design, construction, financing and operation up to 2019.
