Addition of a third line
completed

Upon completion of a large-scale enlargement project in the form of a third incineration line, the thermal waste utilisation plant run by EVN at Zwentendorf/Dürnrohr could boost its capacity to over 500,000 metric tons of residual household, bulk and industrial waste as of January 2010. With its new addition, it now ranks solidly among the largest incinerators in Europe. Designed along the “waste-to-energy” concept, it uses garbage to generate electricity, district heating and process steam for industrial purposes.

The third line was constructed in less than two years – an outstanding achievement considering that the plant had to keep up its normal operations by incinerating 300,000 metric tons per year. With the regular delivery and processing of a thousand tons of waste per day for Lines 1 and 2 handled concurrently with the construction works for the third line, which involved the presence of up to 400 construction workers per day, maximum concentration and accurate coordination were called for. By the end of February 2010, some 30,000 metric tons of garbage were already incinerated on Line 3.
